Aleksandr Alekseyonok has been active in orienteering since 1986, achieving early success in youth and junior competitions. From 1993 to 2003, he competed as an elite athlete, becoming a multiple-time Belarusian champion in middle distance, long distance, and relay events. He represented Belarus at the Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC) in 1994 and later at some World Championships, European Championships, and World Cup events until 2003.
From 2018, Aleksandr was a licensed IOF Event Adviser, approved by the International Orienteering Federation. In 2022, however, all Belarusian athletes and officials were suspended from international activity due to the Belarusian government’s support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Within his club and national federation, Aleksandr actively contributed to the development of orienteering in a wide range of roles — including event controller, youth and junior coach, team leader at training camps and international competitions, and course planner. The Belarusian Orienteering Federation has recognised his work multiple times for designing the best courses of the year.
He also worked as a personal coach, helping athletes of various levels improve their technical navigation and decision-making.
In 2021, Aleksandr was forced to leave Belarus with his family due to political repression. He was targeted for his active and open opposition to the country’s totalitarian regime after the 2020 elections. Facing the risk of arrest and prison, he had no choice but to flee. Now living in Poland, he continues his work in orienteering.
Aleksandr also strongly condemns Russia’s horrific and unjustified war against Ukraine — a war of destruction and terror that has caused enormous suffering and tragedy for millions of people.
In 2023, he published Confident Orienteering Book 1: Fundamentals. The book sparked strong interest among orienteers worldwide: it has been purchased by readers in 46 countries, and official licensed translations have been carried out into 7 languages, in addition to the original English.
Aleksandr remains active in the global orienteering community. He is the founder and main author of Orienteering Technical Training, the largest Facebook group focused on orienteering. It serves as an open space where readers can connect, exchange ideas, and discuss topics related to the sport.
